| Zeeland Nazomerfestival 2010 The 10th edition of Zeeland Nazomerfestival takes place from August 24th till September 4th. With its site specific theatre productions made for special sites in the Zeeland landscape, the festival offers a unique experience. The festival centre, the historical Abbey in the heart of old Middelburg, is meeting point for both audience and artists. This year’s edition opens with ‘The Misanthrope’ by Molière, performed ‘Buitenplaats Overduin’, a magnificent open air setting in Oostkapelle. ‘The Misanthrope’ is one of Molières most famous comedies. Antoine Uitdehaag directs this production that promises to be spectacular in its imagery (set design by Thomas Rupert). ‘Endgame’ by Samuel Beckett, directed by Albert Lubbers, will play in a deserted industrial hall of the former shipyard ‘De Schelde’ in Vlissingen. This setting meets the atmosphere that Beckett demands for his play on the absurdity of life. Both the tragic and humorous aspects of ‘Endgame’ will be explored in this production. The monumental Saint Nicolas Church in Brouwershaven is the setting for ‘Autopsy of a broken heart’, based on the autobiographical novel ‘Commentary’ by the French author Marcelle Sauvageot. She died young as a tuberculosis patient and spent the last years of her life in a sanatorium. Her lover left her and the play deals with this emotional suffering. Dominique Pauwels composed a new ‘Requiem’ for this production. Three actresses and a choir of eight women, perform in this new music theatre production by LOD. The crypt and the tower of the Abbey of Middelburg form the setting for ‘Vlammenstad’, a new play, written by Judith de Rijke, that revives the bombardment and fire of the old city of Middelburg at the beginning of the Second World War. The two characters recall memories of that dramatic experience. From Friday the 28th of August onwards, the festival heart in the historical setting of the Middelburg Abbey, offers a great variety of events. Theatre, dance, literature, film, plastic arts and lots of concerts make the Abbey and its beautiful inner court the place to be. The Dutch press considers the Abbey with its Mediterranean atmosphere ‘the nicest open air theatre in the Netherlands’. Organisation Theaterproductiehuis Zeelandia offers (young) professional theatre makers from the Netherlands and Flanders opportunities to produce new work in Zeeland. Yearly, Zeelandia produces six productions in different genres (theatre, music theatre, dance, opera). Two productions go on tour in the Netherlands and Flanders. Four site specific productions are produced for the annual Zeeland Nazomerfestival, that is organised by Zeelandia. Zeelandia stimulates close collaboration between performing artists from both Flanders and the Netherlands. Due to the geographic position of Zeeland, its historical bond with neighbouring Flanders and its language idiom, this Province in the South West of the Netherlands offers ideal conditions for artistic collaboration between these two countries. Since 2009, Zeelandia has been recognised by the Dutch government as a production house of national importance within the basic arts infrastructure of the Netherlands. |
